Mr. Pete asks:
I hear a lot of people on Facebook talking about "checking" their dogs for anything unusual, for example, fleas, allergies, hot spots, lumps or bumps. I honestly never thought about checking my dogs unless of course I notice something unusual right away. Don't get me wrong, my pets are very well cared for. Your opinion....
Mother:
Well, I have to admit, since I give these guys extra love and hugs daily, I check them daily. They are very use to me checking their feet, bellies, ears, mouths, body and in between their paw pads. Since French Bulldogs are susceptible to allergies, I am constantly "checking" in order to avoid a flair-up.
My French Bulldog Benny who I lost in 2013 to liver cancer was "checked" daily. Not one sign or symptom...NONE. One day he would not eat, that was unfortunately the only sign I had prior to him being diagnosed.
Oh I get checked every day too. Our Jazzi had NO sign either. One day she was here and the next gone!!

We get checked prodded and poked, it borders on abuse.

sadly we as peeps can only really check the external things on our dogs - they tend to hide pain so well which is why we don't often catch signs of cancers etc until it is too late.
ReplyDeletemy momma is a little over the top on that front, every hug or snuggle turns nearly into an autopsy... butt fortunately all the weird things she discovered were just dirt :o)
ReplyDeleteMom checks us all the time, she's definitely over the top!
ReplyDeleteYep we agree with Stellaroose. Abuse it is and oh the indignity. Have a fabulous Friday.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Molly
I check Chooey and the rest of the pack too. It's a good thing Chooey and Puppy Brown are compliant. The rest however do this annoying teeth gritting that drives me crazy. Hopefully the habit stops eventually
ReplyDeleteHugs and stroking are the best way to feel anything that is there that shouldn't be. I know Dip has a little fatty lump on her side but it is nothing to worry about the vet said.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, that is how dogs let us know they are not well by not eating like poor Benny.
Dip and Elliot x
Our mom and dad are always checking us too!
ReplyDeleteYour Pals,

We get more pokes and prods than a KEYBOARD... Daily... and we are looked at more often that we care to admit. It is just a PEEP Obsession an we Tolerate it... hehehehehe

I check about once a week, a real scrub down. Rosie thinks we are at the spa, me giving her a massage. She hates when I look between her toes.
ReplyDeleteWe do not like it but must put up with all the poking and prodding! It is scary to think there is no signs at all for very dangerous and fatal, diseases.
ReplyDeletewe get checked over all the time too

Mom's last dog Trine did the same thing, quit eating and a week later she was gone from pancreatic cancer. There was no real way to tell. So sad.
ReplyDeleteMine get checked over briefly every evening, especially in the summer when we have lots of ticks. They get a more extensive check every week when they're groomed.
ReplyDeleteBeing long hair guys...the peeps do a very thorough check every evening!
ReplyDeleteThe Mad Scots

Huggie time is when She checks me over.
ReplyDeleteBecause I am seventeen year old geriatric I am always getting squeezed and bent and prodded. Mum can tell from this if I have any aches or pains. Once Dad found a lump on my elbow that had to be surgically removed because the Vet thought it was Cancer. It wasn't. Mum never found the lump because she hadn't checked me for a week or so. No one checked the cat for about two months and Mum turned her over one day and she had a deep half-healed wound in her stomach. She must have fallen and been impaled. We all felt bad. She went to the Vet and came back with a 15cm stitch wound. Her bikini wearing days are now over. We are all or daily squeezes and prods. Xxx
ReplyDeletemy kibbles loved to be checked. it was our special time together. i would "massage" her entire body looking for bumps and spots and over the years i found melanomas, benign tumors and a hernia. but there was no warning for the liver cancer that took her from us. one day she just stopped eating. two days later she was diagnosed with cancer and the next day we had to say our goodbyes. because of my experience with kibbles, i check little bailey all the time.
ReplyDeletexoxo, bailey unleashed
We sorta get checked when we get cuddled. We take preventative stuff, like for worms....
ReplyDeleteMom check us both when we cuddle :)
ReplyDeleteParental Unit checks both me and Bella regularly, but admittedly not every day...she needs to get crackin'! Thanks so much for the reminder...
ReplyDeleteOur mom checks us all the time, too! Never a bad idea!
ReplyDeleteCammie!
Fleas and ticks are a big problem in our area so I check my dog from time to time. It's better to prevent flea infestation than face sad consecuences in future.
