A Terrifying Day

Our day started at 4:45 a.m. Every buddy was sleeping when momma heard Lily licking her chops like she was going to throw up.
We ran to the bathroom sink. Just in time, my Lily spit up.
Suddenly..Lily was gagging like she couldn't breathe. I was so scared.
Mom was shaking. She swept Lily's throat with her fingers and pulled out something scary. Lily still couldn't breathe, mom pulled out more. Lily's life was saved.
CAUTION----the picture is purposely BLURRY since it is so so disgusting.
Lily usually does not eat anything she shouldn't. What could this be? It was VERY heavy and contained hair and hard-hard bits of tiny plastic.
At 5:15 a.m we took a car ride to the Urgent Care Clinic because Lil's gums and tongue were pure white. We thought the worse.
I was a nervous wreck. I was worried about my Lily.
Mom saved the monster stuff in a baggie and brought it to the hospital.
Dr. Daniels and the staff were awesome.
They took X-rays and took loads of time explaining everything.
Lil stayed at the hospital til late at night for observation - 6:30 p.m.
We picked her up. I was very concerned but thrilled to see her.
We headed home..thinking and thinking. Ugh huh, it looks like pieces of Nylabone. We did more research on our computer.
We did not find to many bad words regarding Nylabones, but somehow, over time it appears tiny pieces have stayed in Lily's belly. Well, all our Nylabones are in the trash. Lily gets to eat rice and cottage cheese for two days. YummmmmE.
I am so happy Lily is getting better. If mom wasn't home to save her.....
From now on I will block the door so she can't get in. I want to keep my eye on her.
Have a grateful day and take a moment to smell the roses.
Luv
Benny & Lily

I chew on a Nylabone every day. Momma thought it was totally safe. I think we will throw it away now.

Hugs to Lily, and her very worried family. I am so glad that you were there to recognize the problem and act quickly!

  4. That sure was a close call. Your mom is very good to save that icky stuff and figure out what it was.

Weird about the nylabone, though. I thought that the little bits just passed right through. Did you bring your discovery to the vet to investigate?

Darn, I liked those thingys and was looking forward to them. I guess I'll just have to be content with my cow hooves and deer antlers.

  7. So scary!! And our Mom always buys/recommends Nylabones because she thinks they are so safe. Thank you for the warning.

We are so glad that your Mom was home and super-alert.

Guess what? Our peeps used to live on Azuer in Mission Viejo and our human brother and sister still live there (but not in our old house).

  11. Oh Benny! How scary!!! Lily was so lucky to have your smart mommy!

As for Nylabones, we don't get them just because we eat them too, and me mom is scared that we might get in the same trouble that Lil did. Not that we ever did though... it would just make our poop rainbow colors! The company says they are digestible, but every now and then a doggie like Lil with have trouble. But, every dog's chemistry is not the same, so that makes since.

Mom DOES buy us those hard white Nylabones that we don't play with too much... well, me muffer does some. Me thinks they would be IMPOSSIBLE to chew through unless you have jaws like MANGO MAN!

  15. Oh gosh we are happy to hear Lil is okay but it is scary to think what might have happened if she didn't puke up that yucky stuff! We don't get Nylabnones. Mom thinks they look like plastic and she knows I would gnaw little pieces off in no time flat.

  16. What an ordeal!!! I am so glad it had a happy ending. I have never heard anything bad about Nylabones but don't use them because unless it is actual food stuffs, contains food stuffs or is a stuffy Moose is just not interested!I will share this info with other Nylabone users though. Phew so glad your mom woke up so easily. Think if she were a really sound sleeper what a horrible morning it would have been (well even more horrible than it already was). What a scare!

  27. Whoa! That is a scary piece of information. Nylabones are the ONLY think Fergi will even think about playing with, and that's not even playing. We're gonna be keeping a close eye on her ... if she ever starts showing more interest, we're hoping by then she's started taking a liking to some sort of substitute.

Thank you sooo much for sharing this with us ... even if it was a horribly distressing story. We're so glad Lily is okay now.

    On alert,

  28. Oh, my... That made me scared just reading about your frightening wake-up!! Poor Lily, and poor mom - I just can't imagine! I do think Nylabones fall into the "too good to be true" category - they break lots of toofers off too! Since you can't have them anymore, tell your mom to buy you some antlers to chew on - I think they are even better than nylabones, and better for you too :)

    Glad Lily is OK!!

  29. We are thankful that our Mom never got us any Nylabones! She is worried about the Greenies now because she read somewhere that if the doggies eat off the toothbrush part of the greenie, then the stick part could get stuck in the doggie's throat. We are a little worried about that now.

So very happy and glad Lily will be ok and that Mom was on hand to save her!!! HOORAY!!! We did not want our Mom to cry this week. xoxoxo Toby, Ginger, Jeter and Halle

  30. Thank you, merci.. For every buddys thoughtful words. We have been chewing those hard bones for years. Hopefully this is a very isolated incident. But we threw them away in the trash anyhow. Our friends on the French Bulldog Network said they broke a few tooths!

  35. OMG! This is really scary to us. We have Nylabones all over our house. It's our favorite thing to chew on. Every once in awhile, Stella will cough while chewing on one. Did the vet say anything about it? We're gonna ask our vet about it.

We're SO GLAD Lily is okay. It must have been beyond scary.

  39. Aww. So glad you're ok, little Lily! And thank you so much for the cautionary tale! I didn't like how Olive's first nylabone disappeared little by little, and now I don't like it even more!!! I often give her carrots and she really likes those to chew on, so I will just try celery and other veggies next time. No more nylabones in our house either!!
